Professor Gary Alan Fine Awarded Lifetime Honor by ASA
The Social Psychology Section of the American Sociological Association has selected Weinberg College Professor Gary Alan Fine as the recipient of the 2013 Cooley-Mead award, which recognizes lifetime contributions to distinguished scholarship in sociological social psychology.
“It is very nice to receive an award — particularly an award that is in the area that one defines oneself as specializing in,” Fine said. “It’s very gratifying.”
The Cooley-Mead award has been presented to the most accomplished scholars in the field of social psychology since 1978, and Fine is the second recipient from Northwestern University. Professor Howard Becker received the award in 1985.
“A good part of the work for which I am being awarded is that which has been sponsored and contributed to by my friends and colleagues and students at Northwestern,” he said. “They have been very important to the development of my research.”
In addition to receiving the award, Fine will deliver an address to the Social Psychology Section at the ASA Annual Meeting in August in New York. The address will be published in Social Psychology Quarterly.
