Advising
During the summer before your first year, you will be assigned to an adviser, a member of the Weinberg College faculty who will work closely with you for fall quarter. In Winter Quarter, you will begin working with a Weinberg College Adviser.
- Most Weinberg students take a College seminar in their first quarter; the seminar instructor will be your initial adviser.
- Students in the Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS) program will have an adviser who has expertise in this particular program.
Role of first-year advisers
First-year students often need help getting started in Weinberg College. Your advisers provide support and guidance as you adjust to the challenges of being in college and learn to find the appropriate classes to meet your interests and requirements. They can answer your questions—and help you find your own answers, too! Advisers are there to offer support when things are going well … and if you need help.
Meetings with your advisers
You will meet with your fall College seminar instructor (or your special program adviser) before you register for fall and winter quarters to talk about your courses, your interests, and your concerns. Then, as you move into the rest of your first year, you’ll want to start building a relationship with your College Adviser, who will work with you closely for the rest of your time at Northwestern! Together, you and your College Adviser will craft an academic program that helps you reach your goals, find opportunities in Weinberg and the university, and solve problems that may arise.
Peer advisers
Each fall College seminar and special program is also assigned a peer adviser. Peer advisers are upperclassmen selected for their knowledge about the university and their commitment to helping new students. Your peer adviser will be another important resource for you during Wildcat Welcome as you finalize your fall quarter plans.
