Distribution Requirement Exceptions for Interschool-Transfer and Dual-Degree Students
NOTE: Students who start taking classes at Northwestern after Spring 2023 should refer to the page describing Interschool Transfer and Dual-Degree Exceptions for Foundational Disciplines. The information below pertains to students who started at Northwestern Spring 2023 or earlier.
Students who transfer to Weinberg College from another undergraduate school at Northwestern can sometimes count courses from the other school toward the Weinberg distribution requirements. The following exceptions apply specifically to interschool-transfer students and students in the BA/BMusic dual bachelor's degree program.

- McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science
- Bienen School of Music
School of Education and Social Policy
Students who transfer from SESP to Weinberg can receive credit toward distribution requirements for successful completion of Introduction to Statistics and Research Methodology:
- SESP 210: One distribution credit in formal studies.
McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science
Students who transfer to Weinberg from the McCormick School of Engineering can receive credit toward the distribution requirements for successful completion of courses in the Engineering Analysis sequence. Such credit is also available to Weinberg students who considered transferring to the McCormick School and took one or more courses, but then chose not to transfer.
NOTE: The policy on Distribution Requirement credit for GEN ENG 205 was revised in 2015-16. If you took these courses during or prior to 2015-16, you can choose to follow the old credit policy. See your College Adviser for details.
- GEN ENG 205-1: One distribution credit in formal studies.
- GEN ENG 205-2: One distribution credit in natural sciences.
- GEN ENG 205-3: No distribution credit.
- GEN ENG 205-4: One distribution credit in formal studies.
Bienen School of Music
The following rules apply both to students who transfer to Weinberg College from the Bienen School and to students enrolled in the BA/BMusic dual bachelor’s degree program. Students can receive credit toward the distribution requirements for completion of the following music courses:
- MUSIC 111-1, -2, -3: One distribution credit in formal studies.
- MUSIC 211-1, -2, -3: One distribution credit in formal studies.
- Completion of all six quarters (MUSIC 111-1, -2, -3 and MUSIC 211-1, -2, -3): Two distribution credits in formal studies.
- Completion of one of the following courses: MUSIC 213 (course no longer offered), 214, 215, or 216: One distribution credit in literature and fine arts.
- Completion of two of these courses: MUSIC 213 (course no longer offered), 214, 215, or 216: Two distribution credits in literature and fine arts.
