Two faculty named Fellows of the American Astronomical Society

Weinberg College professors Vicky Kalogera and Fred Rasio have been named Fellows of the American Astronomical Society.

This recognition — Fellow of the AAS — is a new honor established by the American Astronomical Society to confer distinction upon AAS members for achievement and extraordinary service to the field of astronomy and the American Astronomical Society.

Kalogera is the Daniel I. Linzer Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the director of CIERA, Northwestern’s Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics. Rasio is the Joseph Cummings Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

AAS Fellows are recognized for original research and publication, innovative contributions to astronomical techniques or instrumentation, significant contributions to education and public outreach, and noteworthy service to astronomy and to the Society.

Legacies of research and service

Kalogera and Rasio are among an initial group of more than 200 Legacy Fellows established by  the AAS Board of Trustees. This group includes past recipients of certain awards from the AAS or its topical divisions, distinguished AAS elected leaders and volunteer committee members, and previously unrecognized individuals with long histories of outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, and service.

The American Astronomical Society, established in 1899, is the major organization of professional astronomers in North America. Its membership of more than 8,000 also includes physicists, mathematicians, geologists, engineers and others whose research interests lie within the broad spectrum of subjects now comprising the astronomical sciences. The mission of the AAS is to enhance and share humanity's scientific understanding of the universe, which it achieves through publishing, meeting organization, education and outreach, policy advocacy, and training and professional development.
