STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Tory Helgeson
Staff member name: Tory Helgeson
Title: Administrative Assistant III
How long have you been working at Northwestern/WCAS? Almost four years.
Do you have a special interest/talent/hobby? I am a tabletop board/card-game enthusiast.
How did you get started? From a youngage, games were always something that brought my family together, and now as my children grow up, I am seeing that happen again. Also, with the massive growth in the tabletop games industry, there have never been more options and opportunities to play.
How do you devote time to this special interest/talent/hobby? I spend evenings and weekends playing board/card games with close friends and family, and then I design games after my children (and wife) go to sleep.
What are your dreams and aspirations? I hope to design a game that receives international recognition. But my ultimate dream is to retire comfortably and play games well into my twilight years with all of my family and friends.
Favorite Chicago and/or Evanston restaurant, location, activity? Favorite Evanston spot is the Sketchbook Brewery (excellent local microbrewery), and my favorite Chicago spot is the Dice Dojo on North Broadway (they have more than 1,000 different games that you can play for free).
What is your expertise as it pertains to your job at Northwestern/WCAS? Staying calm.
If you have $5 and you’re at Walgreen’s, what do you buy? Cold medicine. Someone is probably sick.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Greece. I love the ancient architecture. But if it is really “anywhere,” then I would choose the Mariana Trench.
