Staff Spotlight: Nancy Hickey

Staff member name: Nancy Hickey

Title/Department: Business Administrator/Anthropology

How long have you been working at Northwestern/WCAS and in which departments and programs? I’ve been at Northwestern for close to 5 years.  The first four were in the Math Department, which is a very special place, and will always be close to my heart.  I’ve been in the Anthropology Department for almost a year. The faculty, staff and students here are also terrific, and there is a lot of fascinating scholarship going on here.

Do you have a special interest/talent/hobby?   Music.

How did you get started?  I’ve participated in musical activities since I was a kid, and studied music in college.

How do you devote time to this special interest/talent/hobby? For the last couple of years, I’ve been participating in the Northwestern Music Academy Chorus under the direction of the very talented Natasha Lyashenko from the Beinen School of Music, who enables us to make magic.

What are your dreams and aspirations?  A better world for all of humanity.

Favorite Chicago and/or Evanston restaurant, location, activity?  Foster Avenue Beach in Chicago.

What is your expertise as it pertains to your job at Northwestern/WCAS? Problem-solving, multi-tasking, teamwork.

Please tell us about your work as a member of the Science Salon and Humanities Hour. We work every day surrounded by this great swirl of ideas, scholarship and innovation. Science Salon and Humanities Hour provides a way for the staff to participate and learn from all of that, and also enables staff and faculty to appreciate one another outside of the normal day-to-day. It’s wonderful and uplifting to leave the desk and learn about things from bioethics to Chicago history to the spectacular recent discovery/detection of gravitational waves, and the Higgs Boson before that. This is what working at a university should be about.  So, I enjoy helping to make it happen.

If you have $5 and you’re at Walgreen’s, what do you buy? Chocolate.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’d love to see it all.
