Weinberg Staff Spotlight: Deavon Mitchell
In each issue of the newsletter, you’ll meet a member of the Weinberg College staff. We hope you enjoy getting to know colleagues from around the campus!
Staff member name: Deavon Mitchell
WCAS department or program: Mathematics
Title: Program assistant
How long have you been working at Northwestern/WCAS? 2 years, 4 months
Do you have a special interest/talent/hobby? Volleyball and basketball
How did you get started? I have been playing basketball since I was a little kid. I would visit my neighbors who had portable basketball sets, and play in the alley behind my house. In the summer, I would play every day. Unfortunately, I never got good enough to play in high school, so one of my PE teachers told me to try out for volleyball since I was tall. A star was born ….
How do you devote time to this special interest/talent/hobby? I play basketball at 6 in the morning on the weekdays before work. I also play in a couple of indoor volleyball leagues after work, [and I play] beach volleyball in the summer.
What are your dreams and aspirations? As corny as it sounds, to have as much fun as I can every day and not hold anything back. You only live once.
Favorite Chicago and/or Evanston restaurant, location, activity? In Evanston, Greek Fire Grill (formerly Wild Dogz). If you like unhealthy food, check it out. In Chicago, Finley Dunne’s bar. Just a great local bar.
What is your expertise as it pertains to your job at Northwestern/WCAS? Expense reports, account reconciliations, vouchers.
If you have $5 and you’re at Walgreen’s, what do you buy? Easy. A family-size bag of Dorito’s and jelly beans. And not Jelly Belly’s. I am talking about the big Walgreen’s-brand jelly beans.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Cancun, Mexico, though not for spring break. I could use some fun in the sun.
