Anderson Funds Bolster Humanities Research
Faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences will be able to obtain additional research funding from the Harold & Virginia Anderson Research Fund, Interim Dean Mark Ratner has announced.
The endowed fund, which supports research at Weinberg College, will allow the College to increase its annual support to a maximum of $6,000 per account. The new funding is immediately available to tenure-line faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences not presently receiving other discretionary funding.
The influx of capital will support scholars as they pursue the pioneering research that has become a hallmark of the College.
“I am pleased to be able to make a contribution toward sustaining this well-earned reputation,” Ratner said in a letter to Weinberg faculty.
In addition to the increased funding, Ratner noted that the existing humanities travel program would continue along with the revised top-up funding model. That program provides tenure-line faculty without other sources of funding up to $2,000 to present papers or to travel abroad for research.
Ratner, who called humanistic study “an essential component of a liberal arts and sciences education,” expressed hope that the additional funding would provide humanities faculty the freedom, resources and confidence to pursue their scholarly interests wherever they might lead.
