Third Annual Weinberg College Career Summit
Generously sponsored by the Austin J. Waldron Student-Alumni Connections Program
This all-day event will feature a welcome breakfast, morning skills-building workshops, lunch, alumni industry panels, an inspriring keynote address, and a student-alumni networking reception. The event, open to rising sophomores and juniors, will emphasize career exploration.
Spots will be limited and sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who attend the summit must attend all sessions.
Schedule
Monday, September 23rd, 2019, 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.; the day will start in the Guild Lounge in Scott Hall
- 9-9:45 a.m. – Registration and breakfast (Guild Lounge)
- 9:45-10:15 a.m. - Welcome and opening remarks (Cahn Auditorium)
- 10:30-11:30 a.m. – Morning workshop session (University Hall)
- 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m. - Lunch (Third Space at Kresge)
- 12-1 p.m. – First industry cluster (Kresge)
- 1:15 -2:15 p.m. – Keynote address (Cahn Auditorium)
- 2:30-3:30 p.m. – Second industry cluster (Kresge)
- 3:30-4:30 p.m. – Student-alumni networking reception (Guild Lounge)
Morning Workshops
Facilitated by Northwestern Career Advancement Advisers and Counselors. Students choose one (both sessions will review additional tools/resources as well as how the concepts discussed impact the internship/job search):
- Skills & Strengths Inventory - What do I like? What am I good at? How can I turn these into a successful career? Do an assessment before the Summit to then work with our NCA career counselors to learn more about your skills and strengths.
- Networking & Telling Your Story - Part presentation and part workshop, students will be able to identify their unique skills, practice articulating their skills through professional narratives, and learn how to communicate with others to build their professional network.
Afternoon Industry Clusters
With successful alumni. Students choose two:
- Healthcare - Did you start out pre-med but are now wondering if you'll stick with it? Are you fascinated by medicine but not sure you want to be a doctor? Does global health and health strategy appeal to you? Come hear from our alumni who pursued various careers within healthcare.
- Consulting - Everyone seems to want to work in consulting, but what does it really mean to be a consultant? What is it like to work at some of the consulting giants? Hear from our alumni who work in consulting or who started their careers that way.
- Law - Are you thinking about a career in law? Find out about different legal careers, hear from NU alumni who went from WCAS to law school, and ask questions to see if law school is right for you!
- Finance - The career options in the world of finance are vast! Hear from some of our alumni to find out about different paths you can take. Hear from alumni who work in private equity, investment banking, and general finance.
- Government & Nonprofit - Are you interested in a career in public policy or government? Do you want to work in the nonprofit space before moving into the private sector? Is advocacy and activism your passion? Hear from our alumni about the many different career options in public policy, government, & nonprofits.
- Technology & Big Data - What does a career in big data or data analysis look like? Do you want to explore the tech space even though you aren't an engineer? Hear from some outstanding alumni who work in these fields.
- Teaching & Research - There are a lot of Weinberg alumni who end up teaching or continuing in education to do research. Hear from Weinberg alumni who work in the teaching and research fields to see if this is a route you are interested in taking!
- Communications, Marketing, & Media - There are so many different directions you can take when it comes to careers in communications. Hear from Weinberg alumni who work in various roles within this industry.
Keynote Address
Three-time Emmy-winning media personality turned entrepreneur and professor, Jeanne Sparrow '91, '15 MSC, will talk about her arts and sciences degree set her up for career success.
Student-Alumni Networking Reception
Students and alumni will casually connect over mocktails and appetizers.
Registration Information
- Registration is now open through Eventbrite.
- The event will be capped at 200 students. Cancellations will not be accepted.
- Students must choose which sessions they will attend when they register.
- The Weinberg College Career Summit is free to students.
