Non-Credit Internships

Outside internships may be great way to gain practical experience, fuel academic interests and more. Any student may engage in a summer internship without Northwestern’s permission, if that internship is not for credit.

Finding an Internship

The best on-campus resource for internships is Northwestern Career Advancement.

Sometimes a student hopes to do a non-credit internship and is told by the sponsoring organization that the school needs to give academic credit for it.

  • In this case, students should contact their Weinberg College Adviser to talk about options.
  • Students may be able to register for a special non-credit internship course GEN LA 114 (General Liberal Arts 114), and the sponsoring organization can be sent a confirmation of enrollment. Please note that this option is only available during the summer, and only for students whose home school is Weinberg.

Volunteering

Volunteering can give academic work palpable form; students can explore options for the future and prepare for a post-Northwestern career. Someone studying economics and gender could connect with a domestic violence shelter. A student who wants to be a doctor could volunteer at a hospital or with a group planning a walk to raise money for cancer research. A student writing a thesis about racial identity in literature could volunteer with an advocacy organization related to issues explored in the thesis.
