Science Salon & Humanities Hour
Science Salon & Humanities Hour - Lectures at Lunch for Staff
There is remarkable research and scholarship that surrounds us every day at Northwestern University. Weinberg College staff members host an ongoing series of faculty talks given especially for staff where there is plenty of opportunities to ask questions, discuss, and learn about what the scholars we work with do, and the new knowledge they create.
Please share your thoughts and preferences regarding speakers and topics by filling out our survey.

Foods of the Americas: Natives and Newcomers Every time we munch a bowl of popcorn, order some French fries, or drink some bubble tea, we are eating history: every ingredient and every recipe has a story to tell about Native Americans and immigrants, farmers and cooks, innovations and traditions. This talk traces the surprising histories of some favorite American foods. |

The lasting impacts of school shootings. While over 240,000 American students experienced a school shooting in the last two decades, little is known about the impacts of these events on surviving youth. In this talk, I will discuss my recent work on the persistent effects of school shootings on students' well-being and economic trajectories. |

The Story of Your Life People make sense of their lives through stories. I will describe my research program into the function and structure of life stories, with special emphasis on redemptive narratives, in which the protagonist overcomes adversity to achieve an enhanced state or status in life. Redemptive life narratives are associated with psychological well-being and a positive engagement with the world. I will also briefly consider a strange case of an especially prominent person who never formulated a story for his life, and the broad ramifications of that particular psychological oddity. |
