A View to the East

Kitagawa Utamaro's most famous picture book, first published in 1788, depicts plants, insects and reptiles accompanied by short poems in Kanji characters.

Northwestern students fascinated by Asian culture and literature will soon enjoy a wider array of opportunities to study the field.

The newly created Department of Asian Languages and Cultures will add eight new Asianist scholars to the Weinberg College faculty. Together they will work with colleagues in departments such as Art History and History and develop a robust curriculum in Asian studies. Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Korean studies will form the core of the new department.

A new major in Asian Languages and Cultures will be developed as the curriculum grows.
