Storing Sensitive Data in Box with SAFER

Migration from Box and SAFER to Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive

Northwestern is transitioning from Box to Microsoft OneDrive and SharePoint, and Box will no longer be available effective, August 31, 2022.

SAFER (Sensitive Administrative Files E-Registry) is an application that interacts with Box to offer self-service permissions management that enhances the security of Box files beyond what is provided standard in Box for storing sensitive data.

Whereas Box and other cloud storage solutions have established permission management methods and notification alerts for all files regardless of their content (per domain), SAFER provides additional security for sensitive folders, specifically, with additional permissions features and notifications.

SAFER was developed by Weinberg College IT to support the complex environment of a Tier 1 Research University where multiple spheres of mission-critical data converge and require differential security procedures, but where ease of use and governance demands storing data together in one place. SAFER is multi-tenant and can be employed by other Northwestern organizations, if desired.

SAFER can optimize Cloud File Sharing for sensitive data in areas such as:
