Staff Spotlight- Tyler Maclean, Senior Systems Administrator

Tyler Maclean is a Senior Systems Administrator for Weinberg College IT.

How long have you been working at Northwestern?

I started working for Weinberg IT back in fall of 2006.

What is your role at Weinberg College IT?

As a Senior Systems Administrator, I focus on building and maintaining the technology infrastructure that Weinberg relies on.

What made you get into IT?

I followed the cliché path of being into computers as a kid, studying computer science in college, and went directly into IT after graduation. Despite the fact that I find my career very fulfilling, my mom still thinks I spend too much time on the computer.

What project are you working on right now that you’re excited about?

I literally have my head in the clouds, specifically Amazon’s and Microsoft’s. I am developing Weinberg’s strategy for adopting public cloud services and hope to solve the data storage and processing challenges for Weinberg that aren’t being currently met by other groups at NU.

If you weren’t in IT, what do you think you’d be doing?

I'd likely be in another technical field like engineering or consulting where I’m building new and exciting products or services.

What’s something you like to do outside of work?

I really enjoy travelling with my wife, we’re currently up to 40+ countries and we’re always planning our next trip, including a recent one to Patagonia. I think I still have blister from all the hiking we did!
