Staff Spotlight- Agata Nartowska, Technical Support Specialist

Agata Nartowska is a Technical Support Specialist for Weinberg College IT.

How long have you been working at Northwestern?

Surprisingly, this is a question with a pretty complicated answer. As an undergraduate student at Northwestern University, I got my first work-study job at Weinberg College IT in my very first month here all the way back in the Fall of 2012. I spent the following years learning the ropes, and during my senior year became the lead work study student. I graduated with an Asian Studies degree, and soon after got a scholarship to study Mandarin Chinese in Hangzhou, China for a year. After completing the program I came back to Chicago and managed to land a job right back at Weinberg College IT, where I've now been working for over a year.

What is your role at Weinberg College IT?

According to the name card outside my office door, I'm a Technical Support Specialist. I generally say "support tech" as it's fewer syllables. I help our users solve any problems they're having, and try to do my best to make their computing experience as smooth as possible.

What made you get into IT?

While I didn't graduate with a major in a technical field, I've always been computer savvy. I've always liked tinkering with the electronics at home and experimented with our computers (thankfully, I never broke them too badly). I applied to work at Weinberg IT because of the training that was offered: I got to learn how to take apart a computer, replace broken parts, fix software issues, etc. Working with the staff and faculty at Northwestern was an added bonus, and one that I continue to enjoy to this day.

What project are you working on right now that you’re excited about?

This summer I'm helping set up new faculty members' computers, while not that different from some other parts of my job I do enjoy this part of the summer.  Meeting new faculty and welcoming them to the university is always exciting.

If you weren’t in IT, what do you think you’d be doing?

I graduated so recently that this question is still pretty fresh in my mind. Honestly, I'm not quite sure. I like working in IT and the way it allows me to combine both my social and technical skills.

What’s something you like to do outside of work?
I like to think that it's studying Chinese to keep up my language skills but that tends to fall through the cracks more often than not. I enjoy writing (snail mail) letters to my pen pals as a polar opposite to my day job, but I do still enjoy tinkering with computers at home.
Nothing beats a cold beer and an Action/SciFi movie starring The Best Actor™️ Keanu Reeves.
